The Security Behind Every Tap
Here’s what happens in the milliseconds between tap and clock-in:
1. Tag generates unique code
The NTAG 424 DNA chip creates a one-time encrypted message using AES-128 encryption. This code has never existed before and will never exist again.
2. Phone transmits to server
The unique code, along with the tag ID and counter, is sent to Valitags servers over HTTPS.
3. Server verifies authenticity
Our server decrypts and validates the message, checks the counter to prevent replay attacks, and confirms the tag is genuine.
4. Time punch recorded
Only after cryptographic verification does the system record the time punch. Fake or cloned tags are rejected instantly.
Common Questions
What if an employee doesn’t have a smartphone?
You can set up a shared tablet or phone at the location as a kiosk. Employees can also be assigned individual NFC cards that work with a reader.
What happens if there’s no internet connection?
The phone needs a data connection (WiFi or cellular) to verify the tap. In areas with poor connectivity, you can use our offline mode which queues punches until a connection is available.
Can someone take a photo of the tag and use that?
No. The security comes from the chip inside the tag, not any visual code. Each physical tap generates a unique cryptographic response that cannot be photographed or reproduced.
How long do the tags last?
Tags are rated for 100,000+ taps and typically last 5-10 years in normal use. They’re weatherproof and designed for indoor or outdoor installation.
Can managers edit time punches?
Yes, authorized managers can add, edit, or approve time entries through the dashboard. All changes are logged in an audit trail.
